Actually it’s merely a coincidence, that I am trying to debate a denier of the (physical) big bang theory, when I learned about the CBS’s series. I know it’s no hot news now, because it began airing September last year, but I just discovered it a couple of weeks ago and wanted to share with you how much I enjoy it!

And we laughed. And laughed. I read a rather scathing review of The Big Bang Theory saying that there would be no one to watch it, since it’s offensive to geeks and offensive to hot girls. Well, I can’t speak for hot girls (since the only hot girl I watch it with is also a geek), but this show isn’t offensive to geeks–it’s a celebration of geekery. It’s clearly written by people who are just as geeky as their main characters. Jokes about the Doppler Effect. Jokes about weapons-grade plutonium. Jokes about Doctor Who. Jokes about Superman fanon.

“That’s just a joke… It’s a spoof of the Born-Oppenheimer Approximation.”

It is so true! The fist thing that came to my mind when I heard of it was an insulting show depictig stereotypical geeky physicists, but then I watched it and… wow! It’s just awesome! I mean, it’s just great to watch equations on a TV-series board that actually make sense! My favourite joke is at the very fist episode, when Sheldon shows Penny his board and points to an equation that’s supposed to be a spoof of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation! But I guess the scene that made me laugh the most, by far, was when in episode 9, “The Cooper-Hofstadter Polarization", the guys start acting like the 2001: A Space Odyssey-apes with Also Sprach Zarathustra as background music!!!!!! That was a w e s o m e .

The best thing is that both geeks and non-geeks have fun watching it. You don’t have to be a geek to understand the jokes, and we geeks, although portrayed stereotypically, have so much watching it, because we actually see some resemblance in the characters!

So, if you haven’t watched it, do so! The next season will start this September 22!
